Spine Surgery

Gregory CARLSON, MD

Overview

Dr. Greg Carlson is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty training in Spine Surgery.

He completed his Bachelor of Arts in biology at Southern University in Tennessee. He attended medical school at Loma Linda University graduating with Alpha Omega Alpha Honors. His residency and first year of Spine Fellowship were performed at the University of California, San Diego. His second Spine Fellowship was completed at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Carlson has published numerous scientific articles on both basic science and clinical topics, and lectured extensively on spinal reconstructive topics. He continues to teach residents and orthopedic surgeons locally and abroad. Dr. Carlson is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at the University of California, Irvine.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the California Orthopedic Association, the Orange County Medical Association, the American Orthopedic Association, and the Cervical Spine Research Society. He serves on the Editorial Advisory boards for the Journals, Spine & Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, and regularly provide peer review services for submitted scholarly articles submitted for publication to these Journals. He has received research funding for clinical and basic research projects resulting in award winning paper presentations at a number of spine society meetings.

Orthopedic Surgeon

Michael J. GILLMAN, MD

Overview

Dr. Michael Gillman, a native of Orange County, is a Board Certified Orthopedic surgeon specializing in specializes in the treatment of a variety of orthopedic conditions, including general orthopedic surgery, disorders of the foot and ankle, sports medicine, fractures, pediatric orthopedics, arthritis and joint reconstruction.

Dr. Gillman graduated from Stanford University where he received a B.S. in Biological
 Sciences and a Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences.  Dr. Gillman received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University with a concentration in Musculoskeletal Studies, and was elected to the AOA honors society. He then completed an Internship in General Surgery and an Orthopedic Residency at Tufts University/New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Gillman also completed Fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Gillman has served as a governing board member at the Specialty Surgical Center of Irvine, and also at Orangewood Surgical Center. Additionally, he has served as chairman of the Orthopedic Surgery department at South Coast Medical Center. He currently serves on the Orthopedic Executive Committee at Mission Hospital Regional medical center, and is on the Board of Directors at Tarbut V’Torah community school in Irvine. Dr. Gillman has also developed a technique for patient-specific hip replacement.

Overview

Dr. Eric Y. Chang is an interventional physiatrist subspecializing in wellness and the treatment of pain. He offers a variety of treatments for neuropathic and musculoskeletal pain conditions. He treats non-operative neck and low back pain, spasticity, myofascial pain, scoliosis/kyphosis, compression fractures, sciatica and neuropathic pain conditions.

Chang performs a multitude of interventional procedures in the neck and low back, as well as advanced procedures such as spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal drug delivery pumps. He is experienced in the use of regenerative therapies (plasma rich platelets, stem cells therapy) to treat osteoarthritis and chronic injuries. He is also trained in electromyography. His special clinical and research interests are neuropathic pain, spasticity, arthritis and spinal disorders.

Chang’s basic science research interests are in investigating the pain mechanisms of low back pain and sciatica.  Low back pain is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. A common cause of back pain is from degenerative disc disease, which may present with radicular pain. Currently, low back pain secondary to degenerative disc disease is not well characterized and imaging studies do not correlate with the extent of pathology. In addition, little is known about the mechanisms associated with the actual progression of degenerative disc disease and radicular pain. As a result, these patients have limited diagnosis and treatment options for their pain and disability.

Overview

With the philosophy that a thorough physical exam is crucial for successful treatment, Dr. Germanovich takes a hands-on approach to the diagnosis and treatment of pain conditions.

 

He uses a multi-modal treatment approach for every patient starting with therapeutic exercises, manual manipulation, heel lifts, aqua therapy and medications. If basic treatments fail, Dr. Germanovich utilizes precise spine, joint, tissue and nerve injections using ultrasound, fluoroscopy and CT guidance. For complex clinical pain syndromes he may implant spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery systems.

 

Dr. Germanovich’s particular areas of interest are postural biomechanics and musculoskeletal pain due spinal and pelvic misalignment in conditions such short leg syndrome or psoas syndrome.  He is an expert on chest wall pain due to slipped rib syndrome. In addition to his traditional medical education, Dr. Germanovich utilizes osteopathic manual techniques for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Steve A. MORA, MD

Overview

Considered one of the top physicians in his field, Dr. Steve Mora is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports related trauma, knee, shoulder and arthroscopic treatment of the hip and the elbow.  He has a passion for treating and preventing injuries related to mixed martial arts and soccer. He knows on a personal level what his patients are going through both physically and emotionally.

I hope to create a close patient-doctor relationship based on trust and mutual respect. I believe my patients’ medical treatment begins with their complete understanding of their condition, and I promise to do my very best to understand the cause of your pain and then provide a treatment approach that is tailored to meet your specific needs.

I believe that my success in diagnosing and treating orthopedic problems was borne out of my own personal traumatic injury to my legs. While living in Peru, I was struck by a commuter bus, severely injuring my legs and forever changing my life. I have experienced many of the same surgeries that I now perform on my own patients — and I believe this experience has allowed me to be more in tune with my patients’ concerns, symptoms and experiences.

 

My family heritage is Peruvian and I speak fluent Spanish.

Scoliosis and Spine Surgery

S. Samuel BEDERMAN, MD, PhD, FRCSC

Overview

Dr. Samuel Bederman is a double-fellowship trained orthopedic spine surgeon. Dr. Bederman received his medical degree from the University of Toronto before moving on to his residency in Orthopedic Surgery. He then became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in Orthopaedic Surgery and also studied at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia. After completing his fellowship, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in health services research and clinical epidemiology at the University of Toronto. Soon after, Dr. Bederman returned for his second clinical fellowship specializing in scoliosis, spinal deformities and revision spinal surgery at the University of California at San Francisco.

 

Dr. Bederman specializes in adult and pediatric scoliosis, robotic spine surgery, complex revision cervical, thoracic, and lumbar surgery, and minimally invasive spinal surgery. Dr. Bederman is passionate about spine education and has taught as Assistant Professor at the University of California at San Francisco, Stanford University, as well as at the University of California at Irvine. He has trained dozens of surgeons in the techniques of Robotic Spine Surgery around the country.

 

He has spoken on spinal surgery at society meetings all around the world and authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.  He is a member of the Scoliosis Research Society, the North American Spine Society, the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, AO Spine North America, the American Orthopaedic Association, and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
